Working on a portrait of Toothiana, the Tooth Fairy

The Dreamworks film, Rise of the Guardians, turns ten years old this month!  It came out when I was in college and one of my professors did a presentation on the art book, and soon enough I got absolutely fixated.

The film and the books by William Joyce are both so whimsical and delightful, with sudden turns to darkness and tragedy that got me so much more invested in a story about the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus than I ever expected.  They reminded me what I love so much about stories and how fun it is to get invested in magical worlds.

Mostly I have done fan art of Jack Frost, as he’s definitely my favorite character, the one I find the most compelling and relatable.  But the film and books are so character-driven, it’s hard not to fall in love with all of them.  I wanted to try my hand at drawing some of the others, starting with Toothiana, the Tooth Fairy.  In order to get her feathers to make sense and feel correct in my style, I am trying to form some of them to feel like ears, and I’m trying to add movement to the ones on the top of her head like hair.  We’ll see how it goes!
