Thrift Flip – Doll Wardrobe

A white American Girl Doll wardrobe with pink ribbons for handles, a rack for hanging clothes, one large drawer, and side shelves. It is covered in scratches and crayon. An American Girl Doll wardrobe that has been painted black, the ribbon knobs replaced with black and brass ceramic knobs, the mirror painted with spray paint, and drawers inserted in the shelvesA lot of what I’ve been doing lately is stuff like this, thrift flips and arts and crafts and DIY.  I found this Our Generation doll wardrobe at the thrift store for $15 when I was looking for something to store my supplies for making custom dolls in.  It was obviously very well-loved and played with by whoever had it before, what with all the crayon, scuffs, smudges, and some residue I’m choosing to believe was food.  I hope they’d be happy to know this is still going to be used for doll stuff, even if not the way they used it.

I had thought that the ribbon handles had been a cute way some parent had done a DIY fix, but then I found out that no, Our Generation was fully charging people $60+ for something with ribbon handles.  I initially thought I’d keep the handle base and make new, not-ribbon handles to attach, but the base was very flimsy plastic so I wound up just replacing them.  I took out the rod in the closet because I do not intend to hang up any doll clothes in this and it would just get in the way with painting and everything.

The drawers are made out of plexiglass I had left over from another project and some storage containers from the dollar store that I hot glued together and painted.  I was initially going to leave them clear so I could see what was inside, but the glue was very obvious and not that aesthetically pleasing, so I painted them and got little label holders instead.  The little handles on the drawers are painted wooden beads (also obtained at the dollar store) screwed in to the plexiglass.  I plan to put doll hair, doll eyes, doll shoes, things like that, in the drawers.

I put dividers in the “closet” section that I made out of a set of those cheap plastic drawers that was already broken and falling apart.  I cut sheets out of the drawers, sanded them, and glued them in place.  This is where I’m planning to put dolls I have set aside for repainting, so the dividers will hopefully keep them from flopping over sideways in a weird pile.  I also want to put extra doll stands there if there’s room.

I tried to save the mirror, but when I tried buffing out the scratches I just made more scratches.  It was very cheap and flimsy, so I wound up just playing with some spray paint with it.  I got rid of the little ledge that folded down to make sure it wouldn’t get in the way of the actual doll storage.

I also added handles on top, because as soon as I got this at the thrift store, it was a giant pain in the ass to move around.  Shout-out to the lady in the thrift store parking lot that held it for me while I was opening my trunk.  Obviously, the intent was for this to just sit somewhere in a kid’s room as a somewhat permanent fixture and the ability to easily move it was not a design consideration (and would have likely cost some extra money to produce).  I wound up having to buy different screws for the handles than what was provided because I needed them to be longer and to add washers and nuts to hopefully prevent the handles from just tearing right off.  So far, so good!

I’m really happy with this and I can’t wait to put all my supplies in their own specific area.
